How can brass shafts be reliably detected?

A customer request has reached wenglor, in which a very compact, reliable sensor is needed to detect brass waves. The challenge: The shafts have diameters of 4 mm to 32 mm and must be detected from a scanning range of at least 50 mm – and all this in a maximum installation space of 60 × 60 mm.
In addition, brass, as a highly reflective material, places special demands on the stability of detection.

wenglor offers three suitable sensor concepts for this purpose, which are based on the technology of reflex sensors with background suppression . All models work according to the angle measurement principle and detect objects regardless of color, shape or surface – ideal for brass, shiny round materials or components with varying surfaces.

Compact reflex sensors for reliable detection of brass waves with blue light, red light or laser
Precise brass wave detection – blue light, red light and laser in comparison

Option 1: Blue light reflex sensor for highly reflective brass surfaces

Recommended solution: P1KH019

In the case of very shiny or highly reflective metal surfaces, the choice of light colour plays a decisive role. The P1KH019 relies on blue light, which, due to its shorter wavelength, penetrates less deeply into shiny surfaces and thus provides more stable signals.

Advantages of the P1KH019:

  • Particularly suitable for high-gloss, reflective brass parts
  • Stable sensing distance despite difficult surface
  • Light spot diameter only 4 mm at 50 mm sensing distance – ideal for small waves from 4 mm
  • IO-Link for parameterization and output of switching and distance values

This sensor thus meets the customer’s requirements exactly: compact, precise and reliable – even with difficult material characteristics.

Option 2: Laser probe for the smallest components and high precision

P1KH041 – Laser, Background Suppression

When components are very small or particularly fine detection is required, the precise laser point of the P1KH041 shows its strengths.
With its fine laser beam, the sensor reliably detects even small, rotationally symmetrical objects.

Particularly suitable for:

  • Precise detection of the smallest brass waves
  • Applications where a fine light point is necessary
  • Components with mixed surfaces or shapes

Here, too, the setting is done via IO-Link. The sensor remains robust against changing backgrounds – important for tightly installed mechanics.

Option 3: Red light switches for reliable detection and easy integration

P1KH002 – red light, background suppression

The P1KH002 works with red light and is suitable for applications where differences in height or different contours have to be distinguished. It reliably detects brass shafts and provides stable switching points.

Typical advantages:

  • Robust detection regardless of material and background
  • Detects even minimal height differences
  • Reliable differentiation of different components
  • IO-Link for parameterization and output of distance values

This variant is particularly suitable when surfaces vary or a simple, cost-efficient solution is required.

When is which solution the right one?

  • Brass strongly shiny or reflective?
P1KH019 with blue light (recommended solution)
  • Smallest waves, highest precision, very fine light spot?
    P1KH041 with laser light
  • Standard applications, reliable detection, good value for money?
    P1KH002 with red light

All three sensors meet the specifications in terms of sensing range and installation space, have integrated background suppression and can be flexibly configured via IO-Link .

Conclusion

For the compact and reliable detection of brass shafts between 4 and 32 mm in diameter, wenglor offers several sensor concepts that are precisely tailored to different surface conditions and accuracy requirements. Especially with highly reflective brass, the P1KH019 with blue light is the optimal choice – compact, precise and perfect for the given mechanical boundary conditions.
