In modern automotive plants, doors must be reliably detected at various stages of production – regardless of whether they are NC or NO. A particular challenge arises when very large distances have to be bridged, the door colors vary and no reflector can be used. An automotive customer posed precisely this question: how can a sensor reliably detect a car door over a distance of at least 6.5 m – regardless of color, without a reflector and in compliance with laser protection class 1?
Car doors can be painted matt or gloss, dark, light or metallic. At the same time, the installation situations in car body construction are often challenging – oblique incident light, highly reflective surfaces or large measuring distances make classic optical solutions difficult. A light barrier is ruled out due to the required remote station – and conventional optical sensors cannot reliably achieve these ranges.
Time-of-flight laser distance sensors with wintec DS technology from wenglor are ideal for such requirements. They work completely without a reflector in reflex mode operation and achieve ranges of up to 10,000 mm (10 m) with laser class 1.
Why this technology in particular?
This makes wintec sensors suitable for pure presence checks as well as for continuous distance measurements.
The technology has been a standard in car body construction for years. Two applications show how reliably wintec sensors work even on difficult surfaces:
For reliable detection of an open or closed car door over a distance of 6.5 m – without a reflector, color-independent and safe according to laser class 1 – wenglor laser distance sensors with wintec-DS technology offer the optimum solution. They combine long ranges, robust detection even on difficult surfaces and simple integration into existing automotive processes.
